Till
Stream it in Apps > BBC iPlayer from Sunday 6 October
The murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till in Mississippi in 1955 was one of the key incidents that initiated the civil rights movement in the USA. This biographical film focuses on Emmett’s mother Mamie (Danielle Deadwyler), who campaigned for justice for her son in the face of overwhelming odds. It’s a memorable and moving portrait and Deadwyler is electrifying in the role, with support from an excellent cast including Frankie Faison, Whoopi Goldberg and Doctor Who star Tosin Cole.
Alma’s Not Normal
Stream series 2 in Apps > BBC iPlayer from Monday 7 October. Series 1 available now
It’s been too long (three years!) but Sophie Willan’s off-the-wall comedy is back on our screens this month, and Alma’s life is still a rollercoaster. She may have got herself a talent agent but the roles she’s getting are frankly demoralising, while treating herself to a smart new car turns out to be one of her worst ideas. Willan is fantastic in a role where nothing is off-limits, while Jayde Adams and Lorraine Ashbourne are among the returning cast.

This US comedy has flown somewhat under the radar in the UK but it’s one of the sharpest and funniest shows around. Aspiring Florida businessman Craig (Craig Robinson) is bursting with get-rich-quick schemes, from catching snakes to growing superfoods. He has to watch out for the sneaky moves of his unscrupulous brother Isaiah (Rell Battle), although fortunately he has help from good-natured Jillian G (Claudia O’Doherty). But somehow, no matter how hard Craig works, the odds are stacked against him. A witty and occasionally painful takedown of the American Dream.

Secrets Of Playboy
Find series 2 in Apps > Channel 4 now. Series 1 also available
The first series had 12 episodes and it’s back with eight new ones – perhaps it’s no great surprise that Playboy had quite a few secrets. The programme makers expose the reality behind the superficial glamour of Hugh Hefner’s brand, examining how the promise of sexual freedom proved far more complex for the women involved, and using extensive interviews with those involved dating back to the 1970s.
Les Misérables

After the theft of a lion cub from a zoo proves to be a flashpoint, the situation escalates as the citizens bear the brunt of police anger. A Cannes Jury Prize winner, it was also nominated for the best International Film Oscar.

Everyone Else Burns

Dillon Mapletoft and Oliver Taylor’s series about a bonkers religious sect was one of the funniest new shows of 2023, so the arrival of a new series is great news. There’s hilarious support from Morgana Robinson, Lolly Adefope and Kadiff Kirwan.

Writer/director Ben Wheatley’s career takes another turn: he’s already gone from low-budget British horror (Sightseers, Kill List) to period drama (Rebecca) to Hollywood action epics (Meg 2: The Trench), so why not a Channel 4 series about – checks notes – residents of a care home who turn into zombies? Sue Johnston (The Royle Family) and Robert Lindsay (My Family) lead the brain-munching hordes in a hotly anticipated show that, knowing Wheatley, promises to be at least twice as weird as it sounds.
